Adobe Audition makes this easy, but it isn’t obvious. Here, for example, is a stereo clip (“Space Ambience”) that needs to go into a mono session (“Multitrack Session”). After importing a multi-channel audio clip into Audition, double-click the clip to open it in the Waveform Editor. Steps: Click the Audio Channel Mapping button, or open Preferences Audio Channel Mapping and review the Default Output Channels. The default input device has no channels selected. Configure channel mapping. Once you have your monitor system connected, you need to tell Audition how it is all connected. In Audition, choose Audition Preferences Audio Channel Mapping (Mac OS) or Edit Preferences Audio Channel Mapping (Windows). Map each 5.1 channel to the audio interface output: L: Front left speaker; R: Front right speaker; C: Front center.

If your audio hardware has multiple inputs and outputs, there's a way to instruct Audition. So that it knows which channels for playback inside the application are output to which channels in your hardware, and for input as well. So I'm going to go to the Edit menu here and choose Preferences, and Audio Channel Mapping. 1. Exit from Adobe Audition and/or Adobe Premiere
2. Open Windows Settings and select: Privacy
3. Under “App permissions,” in the left column, select Microphone
4. Turn “On” – “Allow apps to access your microphone”

When you start Adobe Audition, the MME error is no longer displayed. And when you go to Preferences > Audio Hardware, you should see that the audio hardware is no longer “not working.”
